Marathon Oil to Fund SmartLab at Texas City High School

This fall, Texas City High School will have a brand new SmartLab thanks to the generosity of Marathon Petroleum Co. and their support of local education. The Marathon SmartLab complements the Blocker Middle School SmartLab funded by Valero Energy Corporation in 2013. Together, they provide Texas City ISD students with an opportunity to explore hands-on, project-based STEM education throughout their secondary school career. Read More

St. Joe’s Catholic School Featured in Center of Excellence Magazine

Catholic School Center of Excellence magazine’s cover story this month features SmartLab partner school St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Waconia, Minnesota. The article focuses on St. Joe’s innovative C-STEM initiative where student-directed, project-based STEM education is fully-integrated with traditional Catholic values and learning. According to school principal Bruce Richards, “Our mission is to inspire all learners to become the person God intends. We do this by integrating Catholic payers, virtues and service with 21st-century learning”.

Like many of our parochial school partners, St. Joe’s views STEM as critical for Catholic schools to remain educationally vital. We implemented the SmartLab at St. Joe’s one year ago and the St. Joe’s community has responded enthusiastically; enrollment is up for the first time in 10 years and 96% of St. Joe’s parent agreed that C-STEM had enhanced their child’s education.

Why Catholic Schools Are Focusing on STEM/STEAM

There’s been a dramatic increase in interest from Catholic Schools in STEM/STEAM programs. A major reason is the growing importance of offering robust STEM/STEAM programs in all schools of choice. Today’s parents expect technology and next-generation learning to be part of any quality education.

Paul Hans, Principal of SmartLab partner school Roncalli Catholic High School in Omaha Nebraska told us, “If a Catholic school wants to compete with other public and private schools they need to stay relevant”. He continued, “It’s more imperative than ever to give families what they want…that means innovative programs like STEAM centers.”
